Management of Inherited Metabolic Disorders Course

The Management of Inherited Metabolic Disorders Course is accreditated by Dublin City University as a Stand-alone module.

The module was developed by the Children's University Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin in partnership with the School of Nursing, Dublin City University. This module has been developed for qualified nurses who are registered with An Bord Altranais. It will enable nurses to enhance, develop and extend their knowledge and clinical experience in the area of Inherited Metabolic Disorders. The module will provide participants with a theoretical and practical foundation of the context and concepts of care of patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders and will enable the acquisition of the knowledge base and practical experience necessary to prepare for specialisation, expansion and advancement in Inherited Metabolic Disorders nursing.

Lectures are delivered by members of the Metabolic Multi-disciplinary team, namely, Metabolic Consultants, Nursing Staff, Dietetic Team, Pyschology, Social Work, Biochemistry staff.

  • What are Metabolic Disorders?

  • Phenylketonuria
  • Maple Syrup Urine Disease
  • Homocystinuria
  • Galactosaemia
  • Urea Cycle Defects
  • Glutaric Aciduria Type 1
  • Glucose Metabolism
  • Glycogen Storage Disease Type 3
  • Storage Disorders
  • Mitochondrial Disorders
  • Dietary Management of Specific Conditions
  • The role of the Psychologist in the Metabolic Team
  • Psychology related to Feeding
  • Chronic Illness-Impact on the Family
  • Bereavement and Crisis Management
  • Radiological Investigations
  • Case Study Presentations

This course takes place in the School of Nursing; Children's University Hospital, Temple Street and will be run on an annual basis. The course will be advertised in Irish Nursing Journals.
It has received Category 1 Course Approval from An Bord Altranais.


The proposed intake will be 10-15 students per course.

  • Registered with professional body (An Bord Altranais)
  • 1 year's relevant clinical experience.
  • Currently working in healthcare setting
